Days of Acknowledgement
August 9th - International Day of the Worlds Indigenous Peoples
This date was created to reflect on the challenges, discrimination and treatment of Indigenous People throughout the world. Within this reflection, we are also celebrating the importance of Indigenous cultures, histories and traditions as we work together to take steps in promoting and protecting Indigenous rights.
August 10th – 18th – National Science Week
National Science Week advertises building individuals’ curiosity and critical thinking. With over 1000 events throughout the nation, this is a great week to build your child’s wonder of the world around them. The theme for this year is ‘Innovation: Powering Future Industries’.
IEPS is fortunate enough to have an incredible Inquiry program, where students are given a myriad of opportunities to explore what has been, what is and what this may mean looking forward. As we focus on Geography and History this term, students are exploring themselves, their place in our community and the impact they make to the world around them.
Last term, the Science Expo gave students the opportunity to share everything they had learnt and created through their Inquiry focus of biological, earth and space science.

Communication Audit Reflection
As part of our Communication Audit that occurred earlier in the year, the feedback was unpacked at an admin/leadership level, discussed with our Community Engagement Sub-committee, and presented to staff. There were a range of sweeping amendments made following the feedback and further discussions outlined below. We thank you for your feedback on our Communication Audit and the recent feedback received as we are part of a continuous improvement cycle here at IEPS. If you have any feedback regarding communication and/or events I encourage you to email me directly at tom.boyle@education.vic.gov.au.
School Events on Compass
Each school event (excursion/incursion) will clearly outline the following:
- Organiser - Teacher organising event
- Educative Purpose
- Event Date & Time - Start & Finish and the Location
- Additional Event Details - Dress Code, Transport, Cost per attendee, Attendees (Students & Staff)
Furthermore, each event has a thorough risk assessment completed and this is signed off by myself 3 weeks before the event occurs.
All of this information is created and finalised 3 weeks ahead of time and then the Compass event is communicated a minimum of 2 weeks before the event.
Communication of Events
In regards to communication of events, all events are required to be communicated to our respective community members 2 weeks before the event’s date, this includes all of the above information.
The **Term Focus by Year Level will feature all of the events that are in the calendar at the time of printing and all events are required to be placed onto our internal calendar prior to the end of the previous term. (**Term Focus by Year Level is on our website under Teaching & Learning, Term Focus)
This internal school calendar is then swept at the end of the term and uploaded to our website calendar https://ivanhoeeastps.vic.edu.au/calendar. This calendar is then cross-checked with our internal calendar (the process involves teachers emailing our admin team directly should changes occur) and it's updated every week by our administration team.
Bulletin updates
The bulletin now features a future events table at the bottom of the Principal's message that has all of the upcoming events across the school for the next 3-4 weeks.
Further updates
From recent feedback, especially around our IEPS Olympics and cohort level events, the following will also be put in place.
- Whole Cohort/Cross Year Level Activities - Compass event from now on, even if it is free of charge
- Parents want to know if they are allowed to be in attendance? (yes/no)
- Is it school uniform/house colours/free dress (define on Compass event)
- Organising Teacher to send the reminder on Compass to families that haven’t paid and consented - one week out. Then, classroom teachers complete the final check.
- Comms to Class Rep Co-ordinator to distribute information to class reps
IEPS Olympics Closing Ceremony
The IEPS Olympics Closing Ceremony will be a student only event supervised by the teachers, starting at 3pm in the gym. Students are encouraged to wear their house colours tomorrow and bring their flags along if they still have them.
Thank-you all for your support of our School Captains as they ran their first whole school event. It has been fantastic to see the house spirit shine through the variety of events we have participated in and the way students have been supporting each other over the two week period.
School Canteen Update
The school canteen will be closed on Thursday 22nd, Friday 23rd & Monday 26th August.

Reminder: Exploring Emotions Through Art: A Rainbow of Feelings
During Art lessons, students from all year levels have delved into the fascinating world of emotions through visual art. Our primary goal has been to deepen our understanding of emotions. By creating art that embodies a ‘Rainbow of Feelings’, we aim to cultivate empathy, encourage self-expression and foster stronger connections within our school community.
During the Rainbow of Feelings unit, Year 3 to 6 students explored various pairs of emotions, using them as inspiration for their artistic creations. This has allowed them to authentically express themselves through different art mediums of their choice. Similarly, Prep to Year 2 students focused on facial expressions, body posture, colour, line and texture to create artworks that capture a range of feelings.
We are excited to showcase the series of upcoming art displays throughout the main school building this term. These exhibitions will showcase the diverse spectrum of emotions explored by our students, reflecting self-discovery and creativity.
We welcome our community to celebrate this demonstration of artistic expression and emotional exploration by viewing some of our Rainbow of Feelings displays in our main building breezeway from Week 5 (12th August).
- Week 5 – 7 (12th to 30th August) Love/Pride & Scared/Worried
- Week 8 - 10 (2nd to 20th September) Excited/Happy & Angry/Frustrated
IEPS Parent Band - Lost Property
Thank you to all the families who came for an evening of dancing and music at the East Ivanhoe Bowls Club on Friday 2 August. Looks like everyone had a great time particularly the boys conga line and lots of budding musicians wanting to have a go on the mics and instruments after the show. Great to see such a turnout for a fun evening with the school community.

ABOUT THE MS READATHON
Reading can take kids on incredible journeys of discovery, awaken their imagination, and build confidence. It’s always a good time to help them find inspiration and motivation to pick up a book. The MS Readathon has been inspiring kids to read more for 45 years, and this August, it will be more fun than ever before. We have authors and ambassadors who can share their stories, incentives, and prizes to motivate kids. If that is not enough, all the money raised will help support the thousands of families affected by MS in Australia. We have so many stories to share about how the MS Readathon makes a huge difference to people living with MS.
HELP GET MORE KIDS READING
Last year Aussie kids read more than 181,903 books and this August we want to see more kids reading more books! Kids can read anything, including comics, magazines, novels, or read-along with audiobooks. We don’t mind as long as they are reading. Parents can register their kids for FREE. Once registered, they can log books through their online dashboard, earn badges, review books, and share their progress. They can also join a school.
KIDS HELPING KIDS
There are thousands of families living with MS in Australia. You can find out more about MS and the impact it can have on people's lives. All funds raised from the MS Readathon will help fund vital support and services, which include Help Lines available across the Country, MS Nursing, in-home care, speech therapy and physio, Family Fun Days including resources for kids. MS Family Fun Days are in huge demand, for these families it is a rare chance to have a fun time, connect with other families, with all the care and support their family needs.
