Days of Acknowledment
12th – 20th August – National Science Week
National Science Week advertises building individuals’ curiosity and critical thinking. With over 1000 events throughout the nation, this is a great week to build your child’s wonder of the world around them. The theme for this year is ‘Innovation: Powering Future Industries.’ IEPS is fortunate enough to have an incredible Inquiry program, where students are given a myriad of opportunities to explore what has been, what is and what this may mean looking forward. As we focus on Geography and History this term, students are exploring themselves, their place in our community and the impact they make to the world around them. Last term, the Science Expo gave students the opportunity to share everything they had learnt and created through their Inquiry focus of biological, earth and space science.

The Parent / Caregiver / Guardian Opinion Survey
The survey is an annual survey offered by the Department of Education designed to assist schools in gaining an understanding of families’ perceptions of school climate, student behavior, and student engagement. We encourage all families to participate. Our school will use the survey results to help inform and direct future school planning and improvement strategies.
All families would have received an email from Carmel Sitilidis (Admin Officer) carmel.sitilidis@education.vic.gov.au on Monday 7th August with the Individual Parent Login details and information on how to complete the survey. The survey only takes 15-20 minutes to complete. If you did not receive the email with your log in details, please contact the school directly.
This survey is anonymous, the individual log in code makes sure that there are no duplicate entries. The Parent / Caregiver / Guardian Opinion Survey will be open from Monday 7 August to Friday 8 September 2023.
Please don’t hesitate to contact me if you would like more information.

Athletics Day - By Press Club
Athletics day for Year 3 – 6’s was on Thursday, Week 4 at Collingwood Harriers Track Clifton Hill. Students in Year 3 – 6 participated in many activities including: High Jump, Long Jump, 100m Sprint, Shot Put and Discus. The day went really smooth and everyone had so much fun doing all the nicely planned out events. We were blessed with a warm 20 degree day in the middle of Winter. It was so wonderful to see everybody wearing their house colours with large smiles on their faces. Thank you to the School Captains, House Captains and Vice House Captains. Also, a big thank you to all the parent volunteers and Mr Bartlett for running Athletics Day. We couldn’t have done it without you. Congratulations to everyone who participated and who gave it their best. The students who have made it to Districts will be announced in the upcoming weeks. The next sport event will be Footy Day at the end of Term 3.
There will be more information to come!
Birthdays and Celebrations
Celebrating your child milestones of a birthday can be very exciting. However, at school there are some very important considerations. We have a number of children with life threatening allergies (anaphylaxis). These children require emergency administration of a lifesaving injection of adrenaline (an EpiPen), even if they ingests small amounts of food that they are allergic to.
We have students allergic to a number of foods including egg, dairy, sesame, nuts and wheat. The most important policy at IEPS to keep children with allergies safe is our, No sharing of Food Policy.
We appreciate that this may go against our human desire to share. However, there have been some disastrous consequences at other schools when communication regarding the allergens have been misunderstood.
Some parents prefer their children are not given food for many other reasons, as their child has coeliac, diabetes or they are intolerant of gluten, dairy, fructose or other additives. Some children need to avoid sugar, caffeine and cocoa and other children are unable to eat various foods for cultural reason.
I know it can be difficult, but many families have stated that would prefer that food treats are not given to their child.
You may wish to consider non-food treats such as stickers as these more inclusive for children with allergies and those children who are not allowed to have the food you are wishing to provide. If food is brought in to share, then this will be distributed by the teacher at the end of the day. Food treats must be in packets with the ingredients clearly labelled for students to put in their bags to take home. Please consider, that some students still may not be able to consume it. Children with allergies can only have a treats from their own treat box, supplied by their parents.
Children and parents are not permitted to hand out food to students. Unfortunately, home cooked cupcakes are too problematic it is best to keep them for home.
Assembly Update:
As mentioned earlier in the term we have moved to fortnighly on-site assemblies this term. This week there will be no on-site asssmebly, our IEPS Digital News Episode will be sent to all families on Friday morning via Compass.
Infectious Disease
We ask that if your child is symptomatic you do not send them to school and we thank you in advance as we acknowledge that this can be challenging, especially for working parents.
If your child does test positive for COVID-19 and/or any other infectious disease we ask you contact the school via email Ivanhoe.east.ps@education.vic.gov.au and it is recommended that they isolate for a minimum of 5 days and not attend school until their symptoms have resolved.
In relation to Covid-19 it is recommended that rapid antigen tests (RATs) are used by students and staff:
- If you have symptoms of COVID-19 infection, no matter how mild
- If you are a household or close contact of someone who has COVID-19
- If you are a social contact of someone who has COVID-19.
Rapid Antigen Tests are also available from the front office, please don’t hesitate to come in and collect as needed.

Book Week Character Parade - Wednesday 23 August 2023 - SAVE THE DATE
Book Week 2023
The theme for Book Week 2023 is “Read Grow Inspire”. The theme is focused on how literature has the capacity to develop a child's inner world and how it can plant the seed of inspiration for them to express their own creativity.
The dates for Book Week this year are from Saturday 19 August to Friday 25 August 2023. Each year, many schools and public libraries from all over Australia spend a week celebrating books and Australian authors and illustrators. We will soon begin this celebration in the library at IEPS with a display of the CBCA Shortlisted Books.
At IEPS we will be celebrating Book Week with a Book Week Character Parade for all students and staff. For our Book Week Character Parade, all students are encouraged to dress up as a favourite book character. Children are also encouraged to bring their book along to school with them if possible. If any students choose not to dress as a book character, they can wear their normal school uniform. Please note that the costume does not need to be too elaborate. We would encourage parents to use dress-up clothes from home for the event.
Parents are invited to attend the parade.
