Infectious Disease
Unfortunately we have had to continue to leave our Infectious Disease update in the bulletin. We ask that if your child is symptomatic you do not send them to school and we thank you in advance as we acknowledge that this can be challenging, especially for working parents.
Out of precaution, we have decided to inform you. If your child does test positive for COVID-19 and/or any other infectious disease we ask you contact the school via email Ivanhoe.east.ps@education.vic.gov.au and it is recommended that they isolate for a minimum of 5 days and not attend school until their symptoms have resolved.
In relation to Covid-19 it is recommended that rapid antigen tests (RATs) are used by students and staff:
- If you have symptoms of COVID-19 infection, no matter how mild
- If you are a household or close contact of someone who has COVID-19
- If you are a social contact of someone who has COVID-19.
Rapid Antigen Tests are also available from the front office, please don’t hesitate to come in and collect as needed.

Cross Country Update
Over the past few weeks, the IEPS cross country team has been busy, with students competing at the District, Division, and Regional competitions. The District cross country competition took place at Chelsworth Park on the 18th of May, with nearly 60 students representing IEPS. All students put in a fantastic effort, with 7 students progressing to represent IEPS at the Division level.
The Division competition took place at Banyule Flats on the 31st of May, resulting in 4 students progressing to the Regional level. A special mention goes to Indi Walker, Taj Walker, and Angelica Venizelakos for progressing to the Regional competition. Congratulations to Heidi Mitchell, who finished second at the Regional competition and will now go on to represent IEPS at the State finals.
Finally, we want to extend our thanks to all parents and carers who have attended to support and assist at these events. We're looking forward to another great Term 3 of sport, with the next major event being the 3-6 Athletics Day. This will take place at the Collingwood Harriers Athletics Track on August 3rd.
21 Questions to Ask Your Child About a Book
Students at Ivanhoe East Primary are encouraged to read each night. Talking to your children about the books they read is one of the best ways to support your child’s literacy development. Your child needs to engage in critical thinking to discuss a book — a key skill for success in school as well as life. Here are some tips on how to start and sustain a book discussion with your child:
Before your child reads a book ask:
- Why did you select this book?
- What makes you think this book is going to be interesting?
- What do you think the book is going to be about?
- Does this book remind you of anything else you’ve already read or seen?
- What kind of characters do you think will be in the book?
- What do you think is going to happen?
While your child is reading a book, try asking:
- Will you catch me up on the story? What’s happened so far?
- What do you think will happen next?
- If you were that character, what would you have done differently in that situation?
- If the book was a TV show, which actors would you cast in it?
- Where is the book set?
- If the main character in that story lived next door, would you be friends?
- What does the place look like in your head as you read? Would you want to visit there?
- Have you learnt any new words or facts so far?
After your child has finished a book, ask questions like:
- What was your favourite part of the book? Why?
- Who was your favourite character? Why?
- What was the most interesting thing you learned from the book?
- Why do you think the author wrote this book?
- Would you have ended the book differently? Did it end the way you thought it would?
- Did the problem of the book’s plot get solved?
- If you could change one thing in the book, what would it be?
Treasure Island Review – Year 5 and 6 Excursion
Review by Poppy and Christian – Music Captains
Last Friday, Year 5 and 6 students went to see Treasure Island, a play at Kew High which was performed by the Year 12 Drama class.
The play was based on the book Treasure Island. The main character’s name was Jim who lives with his grandma in a small cottage.
A pirate with a treasure chest comes into their house and then faints. Smollett the captain of the ship opens the chest to find a map to Treasure Island.
They make a bad choice by recruiting Long John Silver, who acts like a friend but really is going to betray them. Silver asks the captain if some of his friends can join too. Jim unknowingly agrees.
The people they recruited are all bad and when they got to the island Long John Silver and his crew tied them up and left them for dead.
Luckily they escaped and while the people guarding them sleep, they eventually catch up to Silver and had a battle to the death. Smollett’s crew won but a few of them were let go.
It was so wonderful to see some past IEPS students performing as well as visiting a high school where some of us will be attending next year.
Thanks to Ms Carman and Ms Fairbairn for organising this great excursion.
