Enrolments
We are currently preparing our Pre-Prep session and Parent Information Night for our 2023 Foundation students. If you are placing a sibling claim and/or know of someone looking to enrol for Foundation 2023 at IEPS, they will need to submit their enrolment as soon as possible to be able to attend the Prep session on the 19th of August and the Parent Information Night on the 30th of August.
Prep 100 Days
On Tuesday the 26th of July the Prep’s celebrated their 100 days of school! The students and teachers dressed up as 100-year old’s and had a parade around the school. Parents were invited into the Prep classrooms to help their children complete a 100 days of school crown which involved colouring, collaging and lots of glitter. The day was filled with fun and exciting activities such as making necklaces with 100 beads on them. We celebrated this milestone event with a delicious pizza and juice box lunch. Congratulations to all the Preps for completing 100 days of school!
Mrs. Lamers (Maternity Leave)
Larissa Lamers last day before she takes maternity leave will be this coming Thursday. We wish Larissa all the best and the safe arrival of her little one. Larissa will be missed while she is on leave, and we look forward to welcoming her back in the future.
Solar Panel Installations
The Greener Government School Buildings (GGSB) program was established to contribute to the Victorian Government’s goal of net zero emissions by 2050 by promoting environmental sustainability and the use of renewable energy in schools. There were a large number of quality applications, demonstrating the desire and commitment of Victorian schools to reduce their carbon footprint. I am very pleased to advise that Ivanhoe East Primary School was selected to participate in the GGSB program to receive a 36kW solar power system. I thank the IEPS School Council for their efforts in supporting this application and a special mention to Craig Lewis for his work on completing the required documentation. The Victorian School Building Authority (VSBA) has engaged with a sub-contractor who is currently working on installing the solar power system on the roof of the Junior School. You will notice bollards and exclusion zones around this area that will be in place for the entirety of this week.
The Child Safe Standards
On July 1, the new Child Safe Standards came into effect across Australia. In Victoria we move from 7 standards to 11 standards which are aligned with the National Standards. The Child Safe Standards aim to:
- promote the safety of children
- prevent child abuse
- ensure effective processes are in place to respond to and report all allegations of child abuse
Child safety includes matters related to protecting all children from child abuse, managing the risk of child abuse, providing support to a child at risk of child abuse, and responding to suspicions, incidents, disclosures or allegations of child abuse. Importantly, the new standards are focused on making sure that schools involve parents and carers more in efforts to reduce child abuse.
Child abuse is:
- any act committed against a child involving: a sexual offence or grooming
- the infliction, on a child, of physical violence serious emotional or psychological harm
- the serious neglect of a child
Whilst we would all like to think that it does not occur in our community, we must not assume that it doesn’t. We have a unified responsibility to both reject and address any form of child abuse in our school community. Every child has the right to be safe and protected from harm.
Our school council plays a key role in making sure that our school complies with the new standards.
- The Education and Training Reform Act 2006 and Ministerial Order 1280 outlines Government school councils powers, duties and functions
- When performing these powers, duties and functions, school councils must comply with the Child Safe Standards and Ministerial Order 1359
Over the coming months we will progressively update our school policies and procedures taking into account the changes to the Child Safe Standards and also making sure we address new focus areas such as safety in online environments.
NAPLAN Preliminary Data
Schools received preliminary NAPLAN data this week. As we moved to an online test in 2022 the ‘big picture’ data can be made available a lot earlier to schools than previous years. Our results when compared to previous years are very pleasing and show that despite disruptions to learning our students are progressing well. We’re thrilled that across the tests of Reading, Grammar & Punctuation and Numeracy that we have a minimum of 95% of students in both Year 3 and Year 5 achieving above the national minimum standard. School comparative data and Individual data is not yet ready and we expect this to be available in September.
2022 Victorian Government Schools Agreement (VGSA) Approval
The Fair Work Commission recently approved the new VGSA. The agreement commenced operation from Monday 25 July 2022 with a nominal expiry date of Wednesday 31 December 2025. There are currently many forums being planned to support the official implementation of this new agreement.
Many of the provisions in the new VGSA have been carried forward from the previous iteration, however, there are some significant changes including a staged reduction in face to face teaching time to a maximum of 21 hours in 2024 (we are already at 21 hours and 40 minutes). In addition new Time In Lieu provisions will need to be worked through, as these will affect out of hour school activities and from 2023, camps. How we manage these events in the future will need to be worked through over the coming months, although this year’s camps do not fall under the new agreement.
Working out our ‘local agreement’ will take time and effort to get the best arrangements for both our students and staff. We will communicate any changes that will impact our community when this local agreement is finalised.

Regards,
Good afternoon,
It has come to light at 2:30pm today that the Athletics Track has been double booked for tomorrow. Due to this, it is not feasible to run the athletics day at Collingwood Harriers as originally planned. For this reason the Aths day will still go ahead as planned on site, taking place on the school oval. Parent spectators are still welcome and encouraged to attend, if doing so please be sure to sign in at the office. However, we will no longer need specific parent helpers due to the altered structure. The structure of the day will commence as originally communicated; Year 3&4’s starting events at around 9.30am and Year 5&6’s starting at around 12.30pm.
Regards,
Justin
