Enrolments
We are asking that any families that are within our zone or who are making a sibling claim out of zone submit their enrolments as soon as possible. This will not only help us to process our of zone enrolments with a better understanding of how many places we can offer, but also start preparing our workforce planning in a timely manner. Please refer to www.findmyschool.vic.gov.au for further information around zoning of schools.
Education State Principals Conference 2022
On Monday and Tuesday of last week I attended the Education State Principals Conference at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre in the city. The 2-day event brought together principals from across the state for the first time since 2019. The two days were spent on exploring the research that underpins excellence in teaching and learning through the theme of “Stronger Together: Every Student, Every School”.
John Hattie particularly focussed on the impacts of Covid on student learning and how changes that were forced upon both students and schools have altered how students learn today. Professor Hattie noted that the evidence clearly shows a drop in student confidence. When you consider that when a student is a confident learner, they can learn at 1.5 x the normal rate, then having a lack of confidence can lead to students stagnating and even going backwards. Professor Hattie noted that following Covid, too many students are scared of taking on challenges. They would prefer to do what they already know, which is the exact opposite of what we want to achieve at IEPS. In modern education, assessment allow teachers to identify what a student knows and what they need to work on next, or what is their next step to progress along the learning continuum. It is up to us as a school and as parents to allow students to fail. The fear of failure is stifling a student’s ability to scale up their learning successes. In short, Covid has created a bubble where some students do just enough and are therefore coasting.
So what is the solution? A significant component is helping students find their motivation, be more resilient and engaged with the curriculum. Motivation and engagement go hand in hand. Student voice and agency is a big part of motivation and engagement as students are provided an environment to take ownership of their learning, IEPS is committed to teaching students the skills required to be reflective and active learners. As educators we will continue to work on developing their knowledge and skills by taking them outside of their comfort zone to be challenged and therefore succeed in new learning.
Staffing
Earlier this term we wished Connor Thomson well on his departure overseas that involved a great opportunity for him. We conducted a thorough recruitment process and employed Rebecca Naylor. Rebecca spent a full week with Connor and 3T as part of a thorough handover process. We officially welcome Rebecca Naylor to the IEPS community and I am sure the wider community will continue to make her feel welcome.
John Buonopane, our IT Technician, has been lucky enough to take on a course that he has been wanting to be part of for a very long time. Unfortunately that means that he will be finishing up with us at the end of term. We have gone through a thorough recruitment process in conjunction with the School Technician Service Delivery manager and have employed Harry Ngyuen who will start with us in Term 3 and will also be part of a handover with John.
East Ivanhoe Village Upgrade (Form to be sent back by Friday)
Last Thursday each family would have received an envelope from Banyule Council. This forms aim is to review parking and traffic pressures within the village. IEPS and Banyule council want to understand a typical journey to and from Ivanhoe East Primary School. This will help them and us as a school understand traffic pressure points and find possible solutions. We ask that you complete this map at your earliest convenience and place it into the prepaid reply envelope and send it back to the council before this Friday 10th June. (Even though the form says 10th May)
Fair Sub Committees
The fair committee met last week for the first time and we have a fantastic group of parents who have put up their hand to drive towards a great event for the school and the community in December. These parents are now looking to set up sub committees for each area and are calling out for additional volunteers to help them. They will have their own outside of Fair committee schedule plans and catchups.
We need additional support with:
Sponsorship and raffle - this will be working with Carla Schwef on talking to local businesses about coming on as one of the three levels of fair sponsor or a sponsor in kind (for things we need like food, printing etc). Also identifying raffle prizes from parents and businesses and setting up the raffle ticket process.
We have an additional sponsorship pack that only needs a slight refresh.
Community / Market stalls – setting up an offer and process for local businesses who would like a presence at the fair. Working with Narelle Fellowes as the lead.
Entertainment – school and additional. We have a gap for a parent to take on an important role of getting some stage vibe happening. In the past this has included musical entertainment, bands, DJs. An avenue maybe an IEPS has talent and/or a “dance routine”
Closer to the time we will also need
- Logistics help – getting rides and set up in and out of the school area as well as helping with crowd questions etc.
- Finance help – managing the cash etc on the day.
If you are interested in being involved in one of the sub committees please fill out the form below at your earliest convenience.
Community Post
We are doing a call out for anyone who has a connection with a T-Shirt printing company. We would like to engage with them regarding our future enrolment packs that new families will receive for students starting in 2023.
